Mardi Gras
January 14, 2008 by pghpicturebook
The theme for this month’s illustration is: MARDI GRAS …whatever that may bring to mind…
- festivals!
- celebrations!
- street fairs!
- New Orleans!
- fun!!
- …whatever!!!!
…bring it with you to the critique group or scan it onto your blog and post a link here so we can all see it…and then make comments on one another’s artwork.
The Critique Group this month will meet on Tuesday February 5th from 7pm to 9pm at the Barnes and Noble (under the Homestead Gray’s Bridge, formerly the HighLevel Bridge) at the Waterfront in Homestead. The group usually meets the first Tuesday of every month at this Barnes and Noble.
John Manders has a class that starts January 15th on Children’s Book Illustration at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts on Shady and 5th….it’s obviously a little late to sign up for this one, but keep checking this site for the next class…I’m sure that it’s great! www.pittsburgharts.org
If you would like to have some of your illustrations considered for being published in the Golden Penn, please email ChrisAnn. ChrisAnnkg@verizon.net
Hey, Y’all!
I so much enjoyed the January critique (thanks, Kim!)– great feedback on our targeted “challenge” and great feedback on my current projects.
I promised to send some links to pictures of the rural Cajun Mardi Gras–so different (and amazingly colorful) than the decadance in New Orleans. How do I submit links?
BTW, my Cajun band, Grand Bon Rien, will be playing for a traditional Mardi Gras dance on Saturday, Feburary 2, at the BMNECC Hall in West Homestead (very close to the Waterfront). Let me know if you need more information….it’ll be so much fun!

Hello- I am wondering if anybody is interested and available-not always possible on both- but to get together for illustrators critique’s,support, encouragement etc. during the day. I live north of Pittsburgh in Harmony but will to travel.
I love what I hear is going on in the evening group but just have yet to make it.
Susan
First of all, I’d love to know more about your Cajun band!
Secondly, I’m not sure that I know exactly how to add a link in a ‘comment’ but, I think all that you have to do is write the address and then click after it and it hyperlinks automatically.
Give it a try…
…I know that I’d like to see the pictures that you’re talking about, also! They sound so exciting! hurry!!!!
Go, Annie! Can’t wait to see those pictures, and I’d love to hear your band! (love the name!:D)
Susan– I’m free during the day, but sadly I’m as far southeast as you are north. Aaargh.
Looking forward to seeing some Mardi Gras art!
Hey, y’all–
Sorry it took so long, but here’s a link to pictures from a bunch of south-central Louisiana Mardi Gras “courirs”—the rural version of Mardi Gras!

I think we’ll have a great time with colors on this one!
Here’s a link to the Cajun band site, if you’re interested in coming to the dance:

Duh–I just realized that our February critique night is actually ON Mardi Gras! Costumes, anyone?
Annie
Anne,
The COLORS! WOW!!! Have you ever been to one of these rural Mardi Gras? It looks like so much fun!
When my kids were little we would always celebrate FAT TUESDAY at my Mom’s house with all of my siblings and their kids…we’d would dress up and paint faces and march from my sister’s house with signs and balloons through the snow to my Mom’s house…(maybe about an 800 foot walk) and we’d take pictures and laugh!….and then we’d eat and eat and eat!!!
I’ll have to dig up some of those pictures!!!!
Good memories!
I’m not sure that I’d be too comfortable dressing up in Barnes and Noble…but…maybe just a little???!!!!
thanks for the links!!!
